The Danish King's Garden (Taani Kuninga) in Tallinn has a special
importance to the Danish. The legend tells that in 1219 when the Danish
King Valdemar Sejr fought a battle at Lyndanise (now Tallinn) a flag fell
from the sky at a point where the King's men were in deep trouble. The
sight of the beautiful red and white flag encouraged the Danish and gave
them new strength, and they won the battle. The flag later became the
Danish national flag, known as Dannebrog. A memorial has been raised at
the spot where this historical event took place. |
